ANGLEC- One year around the Sun

The past year in Anguilla revolves around the sun for more reasons than one, The Anguilla Electricity Company Limited (ANGLEC) celebrated one full year of solar energy production! While ANGLEC’s 1MW solar plant came onto the company’s main grid over a year ago, the company and public should continue to celebrate the importance of this landmark innovation in Anguilla.

Why is Solar Energy Important?

Solar energy is the term used to describe the combination of technology and the natural energy production of the sun to create serviceable electricity.

The use of solar technology is important because it enables ANGLEC to harness inexhaustible, pollution free energy that is also fiscally responsible, appreciating over time.

While the financial benefit of solar energy is important (because of the long-term savings to the company and its customers), ANGLEC is deliberate in securing solar energy for the bigger picture; the positive impact on Anguilla and the planet. While cost savings take longer to appreciate, the improved impact on the environment is practically immediate. Switching to renewable energy sources like solar means reducing ANGLEC’s carbon footprint/protecting the environment from the harmful effects of climate change and global warming.

ANGLEC produced approximately 10% less in carbon emissions from traditional fossil fuels over the last year. A decrease this significant means providing a brighter and healthier future for Anguilla, our region and the world.

Additionally, the solar plant produced over 2,500,000 kwh of energy since its integration. To give a basic idea of how much that really is, 2,500,000 kwh is enough to light approximately 1.73 million 60-watt light bulbs for 24 hours (one day). This performance exceeds projections by approximately 7-10%.

Thanks to the handwork of our contractors and employees ANGLEC is pleased to celebrate the solar plant’s accomplishments. The success of ANGLEC’s 1MW solar plant marks an important period for renewable energy production in the Caribbean. As a champion for innovation, ANGLEC is proud to be providing renewable energy to homes and businesses island wide and looks forward to the future of renewable energy in Anguilla.
