2021 Hurricane Preparation Guide

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1st until November 30th, annually. With the impending effects of the storm season, The Anguilla Electricity Company Limited (ANGLEC) encourages you to engage in early preparation, with the following storm preparedness timeline to help guide your efforts.

When Hurricane Season Begins:

  • Ensure that you have a visible and digital log of all emergency phone numbers in your home (list should include emergency contacts such as: ANGLEC, Law Enforcement, Fire/Rescue, The Hospital, The Red Cross, Local Radio Stations, your Property Insurance Agent)
  • Follow ANGLEC and all essential services, relevant Government Departments and local news outlets on social media and other means to stay informed during the seasonal changes
  • Reevaluate your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, wind and other potential risks.
  • Have an electrical inspection and meter maintenance conducted at your property.
  • Evaluate threats within your home, on your premises and within your general community. Please clean up and report any potential threats outside of your property to the relevant authorities
  • Review National Weather Service forecasts and the meaning of NWS advisories, watches and warnings.

At Least 2 weeks before a storm

  • Put together a disaster supplies kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information and a ‘C’ type fire extinguisher for your property in case of a fire. You should NEVER attempt to extinguish an electrical fire with water because you could be electrocuted.
  • Reevaluate your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, wind and other potential risks.
  • Make all repairs in advance and begin securing all areas that are difficult to reach or may take more time.
  • Reinforce your roof, windows and doors, including the garage doors to help reduce property damage.
  • Trim trees and tall bushes with damaged, loose or overhanging limbs to reduce the danger of these falling or detaching during a storm.
  • Designate a “safe room” away from windows and exposure during high-winds and flooding levels.
  • Purchase a portable generator or install a generator for use during power outages.
  • Remember to keep generators and other alternate power/heat sources outside at least 20 feet away from windows and doors and protected from moisture. NEVER try to power the house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet.
  • Create a list of home essentials to secure in advance just in case you lose power and water for several days and are unable to leave home.
