Understanding Kilowatt Hours with ANGLEC

If you have heard ANGLEC on the radio or reviewed your ANGLEC bills you are probably familiar with the concept of the Kilowatt hour (kWh), but what is it really?

The kWh is a critical measurement that can help you better understand your electricity consumption. Let’s dive it!

What is a kilowatt hour?

A kilowatt hour (kWh) is a unit of electrical energy measurement that illustrates how much energy appliances use. Simply put, it is the measurement that equals the amount of energy used if you kept a 1,000 watt appliance running for 1 hour (1K watt x hour).

This unit is also used to measure electricity consumption as shown on your ANGLEC bill. For example, if you wanted to estimate the electrical consumption for a device in your home, multiply the kilowatt rating of that device by the usage time. For example, a 60W bulb that operates for 200 hours in a month will consume 12 kilowatt-hours of electricity as shown in the calculation below.

  • Example: Rating of a 60W Bulb = 0.06KW
  • Number of hours used per month: 200 hrs kWh consumption = 0.06 x 200=12 kWh

You can use this information to inform your appliance purchases and monitor your usage to achieve big savings on your bill!

It’s also a good way to make really accurate comparisons if you’re thinking of switching appliances, or want to check you’re getting a good deal, because you can look at the exact cost of electricity per kWh.
