HEALTH & SAFETY HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS CHECKLIST
1. GATHER INFORMATION
- Find out how you could be affected during an Hurricane from the Department of Disaster Management.
- Ask how you should prepare for the disaster.
- Ask how you would be warned about the disaster.
- Learn about your community evacuation routes and where the nearest shelter is located.
- Ask about special assistance for the elderly or disabled persons.
2. PREPARE YOUR FAMILY
- Create an Emergency Plan.
- Draw a floor plan of your home and mark two escape routes.
- Find the safe spots in your home.
- Discuss the security of family pets.
- Meet with household members to discuss the dangers of a Hurricane.
- Learn how to turn of water, gas and electricity at the main switches.
- Teach children how to call the Ambulance, Police and Fire Departments in case of emergency.
- Have 3-5-day supply of bottled water and non-perishable food.
- Secure unique family needs, such as daily medication, important family documents, infant formula and diapers in waterproof containers.
- Have at least one change of clothing securely stored in a waterproof container.
- Restock toiletries and personal hygiene products.
- Obtain a fully stocked First Aid Kit and a whistle to signal for help.
4. PROTECT YOUR HOME
- Prune trees around your home. NEVER prune a limb that is near or touching a wire. Contact ANGLEC for help when pruning trees close to power lines.
- Ensure loose items in the yard are securely fastened.
- Protect windows with permanent storm shutters or invest in plywood that is pre-cut to fit your doors and windows.
- Identify a place to store lawn furniture, toys, gardening tools and trash cans (away from stairs and exits) to prevent them from being moved by high winds and possibly hurting someone.
- Have a battery powered radio (with extra batteries) on hand.
- Ensure flashlights (with extra batteries) are functional.
REMEMBER THESE SAFETY TIPS:
- Remain Calm.
- Your Safety is important.
- Protect your family, documents, home and pets.
- Ensure vehicles are fueled and you have cash on hand.
- Listen to the radio for weather advisories.
- NEVER venture outside the home during a storm.
- Only evacuate the home when it is safe to do so and necessary.
- DO NOT cut downed-powerlines
